What a crazy day….I pedaled through some tough heat…one thermometer in the middle of the day in Thermopolis (irony in the town name here) read 95 and the other read 108! Stopping and hanging out with some horses for a few minutes helped clear my head of the blast furnace heat. I pedaled through dry sagebrush country, up the amazing Wind River canyon…full of geological history…and then down to the town of Shoshoni. Suddenly the wind went from 5 to 30 mph right in my face! What to do?! Stay in this dusty town or press on? The Weather Service in a direct call said the wind would subside, but it held up. I made a decision to try to fight it to Riverton, and that was a fail! Sometime in the breakdown lane I had picked up a couple dozen nasty thorns, with two flats. I had to walk the bike into a windswept dumpy campground. The silver lining; at a cowboy bar in the campground a couple was having their 30th wedding anniversary (some place to do this!, my selection for such an occasion would be a bit more elegant!)…there were 3 different cakes they offered me. I took half the carrot cake and consumed it while picking thorns out of $70 bike tires and patching flat tire tubes!
